Sonatina Kansa is a dynamic solo for Late Intermediate piano, commissioned by the Newton Music Teachers Association (Newton, KS). Written in sonata-allegro form, this engaging work moves between E Major and E Minor, creating expressive contrast through rhythmic variety, modulation, and harmonic depth.

Students will explore eighth notes, dotted rhythms, triplets, staccato-legato contrasts, and double-note passages, along with hand-over-hand motion and melodic interplay between the hands. Both technically rewarding and musically satisfying, Sonatina Kansa offers a fresh take on classical form while honoring the regional flavor of its Midwestern roots.
