LATE INTERMEDIATE PIANO SOLO
by Tom Gerou
Moto perpetuo is a vibrant late intermediate piano solo driven by continuous motion, rhythmic energy, and shifting textures. Set in E-flat major, the piece combines arpeggiated patterns, syncopated pedaling, and recurring rhythmic figures to create a strong sense of momentum from beginning to end.
Technical and musical challenges include arpeggios in one hand and split between the hands, asymmetrical meter, finger sustain, and bringing out the melody within an active texture. Unexpected harmonic changes and repeated patterns keep the music moving while requiring careful balance, voicing, and control.
The piece also reflects minimalist and synthesizer/sequencer influences, giving the work a contemporary character within its varied rondo form. Pianists are encouraged to shape the hymn-like melodic material clearly while maintaining the underlying pulse and forward motion.
Includes practice and performance guides.
