“Harold the Cat” is a humorous and thoroughly charming piano solo about a plump feline who can’t resist his favorite meal—spaghetti and meatballs! With its playful lyrics and catchy rhythm, this elementary-level piece invites students to bring Harold’s antics to life at the keyboard.
Written in triple meter, the solo features five-finger patterns, hands-together playing, and sequenced patterns that strengthen coordination and phrasing. Students encounter ascending double 3rds, 1st and 2nd endings, repeat signs, and expressive touches such as accents, staccato, crescendo, and diminuendo. These elements combine to create a lively, character-filled performance piece.
With its singable melody and irresistible humor, “Harold the Cat” offers a delightful blend of musicianship and imagination. Perfect for recitals or classroom fun, this piece helps young pianists develop steady rhythm, articulation, and expressive storytelling—all while celebrating one unforgettable spaghetti-loving cat!

To be honest, I bought this piece simply because I adored the cover art. I have a pudgy cat who judges me daily with a similar look as Harold's. With that image on the front, how could it not be a great piece? Plus, I always like what Bernadine writes. :)
And I was not disappointed. My students are all itching to play it...I think even my cat, Camille, approves.
