Encouraging pianists to achieve greater musical expression through the practical application of technique
by Tom Gerou & Ingrid Jacobson Clarfield
Early Intermediate to Intermediate Piano
The advancement of piano technique depends on physical control and dexterity to achieve musical expression. Piano Etudes for Developing Musicality, Book 1 presents a curated collection of studies (études) that connect specific technical goals to expressive musical results.
Units 1–9 feature selections from 19th-century piano teaching literature, carefully chosen for their musical appeal, accessible length, and developmentally appropriate challenges. Each unit targets a specific technical focus, with special attention to meter, key variety, and progressive pacing.
Unit 10 includes newly composed Recital Etudes by Tom Gerou that combine multiple techniques introduced earlier in the book — offering a cumulative and creative musical experience.
This volume encourages pianists to explore physical gesture, touch, and musical intent as an integrated part of technical training.
