Essence of One was conceived as a set of graded character pieces for right and left hand alone. While composed in major and minor keys, many of the pieces have modal harmonic shifts and hemiola elements in the rhythm. They also serve as textural studies in voicing melodies and in balancing accompaniments while playing with one hand. Performers should feel welcome to express melodic freedom while exploring the textures. Time is needed to move the arms and hands over a wide range of the keyboard and a performer should never feel rushed in expressing themselves through these pieces. Personal enjoyment is key, and the printed score is only the beginning in learning how to bring this type of texture alive in sound.
