Notturni d’intaglio were inspired by my love for Chopin’s Nocturnes as well as the passionate Iberia collection by Albéniz. Both composers created romantic music that lifts the soul. Chopin’s focus was always on correct phrasing. My objective was to compose lyrical pieces that expand the student’s understanding of expressive playing by creating melodies that imitate the natural inflections of the human voice. In performance, all six Notturni d’intaglio have individual merit. Therefore, they can be performed independently or together, in any sequence.
